India Salt

Application specification hub

Industrial salt uses—and what each buyer should specify

Industrial salt is predominantly sodium chloride, but one catalogue label does not make every lot suitable for every process. This application hub connects common uses with the technical questions, product form and evidence a buyer should define before price comparison.

Industrial salt is a family of requirements, not one universal grade

Sodium chloride can serve as a chemical feedstock, brine ingredient, processing aid or formulation input. The same words—industrial salt—can therefore describe orders with very different purity, impurity, moisture, particle-size, packing and test requirements. Buyers should begin with the process rather than copy a competitor's specification without understanding it.

IS 797:2023 is the current Indian standard for common salt used by chemical industries. The Salt Commissioner Organisation publishes Grade I and Grade II numerical reference values. Those values provide a useful base, but an individual plant can need tighter, looser or additional contractual limits.

The table below identifies questions to ask; it does not certify a product for the named use. The process owner should decide which parameters are critical, which method applies and what trial result constitutes acceptance.

Physical form can be as important as the chemistry

Loose crystals, 25 kg bags and 50 kg bags describe commercial handling formats. Fine powder, medium crystals, compressed tablets and pellets describe different physical products. Particle size can affect flow, blending, dissolution and residue, while bag size affects labour, dosing and waste. A chemical match alone may not make the form operationally acceptable.

India Salt's current industrial catalogue is crystalline salt supplied loose or in 25 kg and 50 kg bags. It does not list compressed water-softener tablets, pellets, laboratory reagent, pharmaceutical or injectable grades. If a buyer needs a particular sieve distribution or physical form, that must be confirmed separately.

A safe path from search result to repeat supply

First, write the process requirement. Second, screen suppliers against the mandatory chemistry and operational form. Third, agree the sample, test method, certificate and rejection rule. Fourth, run a representative paid trial. Finally, preserve the accepted specification and lot evidence in the repeat-order process.

Only technically acceptable offers should enter the landed-cost comparison. Product price, packaging, testing, freight, unloading, handling loss and process impact belong in separate fields. This prevents a lower headline rate from winning before the buyer knows whether the material can perform.

  • Name the end use and process owner
  • List mandatory and informational parameters
  • Specify form, packing and monthly quantity
  • Define sampling, COA and independent testing
  • Run and document the commercial trial
  • Track delivery and lot consistency over time

Buyer questions

Frequently asked questions

What is industrial salt used for?

Industrial sodium chloride is used across chemical processing, brine preparation, detergent and soap, textile, leather and other operations. The function and acceptable specification vary by process.

Is all industrial salt IS 797 Grade I?

No. Industrial salt is a broad commercial description. The buyer must state the required grade or full custom parameter table and obtain lot-specific evidence.

Does India Salt sell pharmaceutical or laboratory sodium chloride?

No such grade is listed in the current catalogue. The site offers bulk industrial crystalline salt and refined iodized edible formats only.
