The Indian standard buyers should know
BIS IS 7224:2006 covers iodized salt, vacuum evaporated iodized salt and refined iodized salt. The BIS product manual describes sampling and testing for moisture, insoluble matter, sodium chloride, calcium, magnesium, sulphate, iodine and other characteristics.
A buyer should state the exact product type and intended use. A label such as ‘edible’ or ‘refined’ is not a replacement for an agreed specification, licence verification and batch evidence.
Iodine, packing and the distribution journey
The BIS consumer summary notes a minimum iodine level of 30 ppm at manufacture and 15 ppm at retail. That difference reflects the need to protect iodine through production, storage and distribution. Packaging, sealing, humidity, time and handling all matter.
For direct human consumption and food use, FSSAI guidance also matters. The buyer or brand owner should confirm the current food-safety licence, label declarations, pack material, batch marking, best-before and storage requirements applicable to the transaction.
| Format | Outer packing | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Bulk trade salt | 50 kg bag | Institutional or trade requirements with suitable controls |
| 1 kg pouches | 50 kg outer bag | High-throughput distribution |
| 1 kg pouches | 25 kg outer bag | Smaller handling units and distribution |
Private labels and custom packs need a written brief
Custom packaging can involve film specification, artwork, statutory declarations, print cylinders or plates, minimum run, wastage, outer bags and production scheduling. The published generic-pack price should not be treated as a finished private-label quote.
Send pack size, target quantity, artwork status, material structure, required declarations, barcode needs, destination and launch date. India Salt can then confirm what is operationally available and quote custom packaging at actual cost.
Buyer questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order on India Salt?
The published catalogue accepts whole-metric-tonne quantities from 1 MT. For larger or repeating requirements, buyers can use the same product page to calculate the goods value and start with a capped deposit.
Are packing and freight included?
Generic packing and loading are included in the displayed product price. Freight is confirmed at actual cost after the order, or the buyer may arrange a transporter. Custom packaging is quoted separately at actual cost.
Is GST charged on salt in India?
Salt under HSN 2501 is listed at a nil GST rate by CBIC. Buyers should still ensure the invoice description, HSN and any bundled services match the actual transaction.
What is the difference between a 50 kg trade bag and 1 kg pouches?
A trade bag contains salt directly in the larger bag. In a pouch format, salt is sealed into individual 1 kg consumer units and those pouches are placed inside an outer bag, adding material and packing cost.
Does India Salt provide custom-branded pouches?
Custom packaging can be requested and is quoted at actual cost after the requirement is reviewed. Availability, compliance, artwork and minimum-run conditions must be confirmed before an order is accepted.
