Industrial salt
Industrial buyers commonly focus on process chemistry such as NaCl, moisture, insolubles, calcium, magnesium, sulphate and iron. IS 797 is an official reference for common salt used by chemical industries, but each process can impose its own contractual limits.
Edible iodized salt
Edible salt enters the food chain and therefore adds food-safety licensing, product-type, iodization, contaminants, packaging, labelling and traceability considerations. BIS IS 7224:2006 covers named iodized-salt product types, and FSSAI rules/guidance govern food use.
Why appearance is not enough
White crystals or a high NaCl number do not prove that a lot is suitable for food or a particular industrial process. Buy against intended use, written specification and the correct evidence. Never upgrade or downgrade the use based only on a visual check or generic invoice description.
| Question | Industrial salt | Edible iodized salt |
|---|---|---|
| Primary control | Process/contract specification | Food standard and licence controls |
| Iodization | Not inherently required | Required for covered human/food uses |
| Packing | Loose or industrial bags | Food-suitable trade or consumer packs |
| Evidence | COA/process parameters | Licence, label, batch and food-product tests |
Substitution decision: stop at intended use
If the material will be eaten directly, enter food manufacture or be repacked for consumers, route the requirement through the applicable edible-salt, licence, labelling and traceability controls. Do not accept industrial material because its NaCl number appears high. If the material enters an industrial process, route it through the process specification even when an edible product is offered.
A substitution request should identify the proposed product, reason, complete chemistry, regulatory status, pack, process impact and approving owner. Approval for one trial or one application should not silently become approval for all sites or uses.

Buyer questions
Frequently asked questions
Can industrial salt be eaten if it looks clean?
Do not use industrial salt for human consumption based on appearance. Food use requires the applicable edible product, controls, licence, packing and evidence.
Can edible salt be used in industry?
Only if it meets the process specification and is commercially sensible. An edible label does not guarantee the industrial impurity limits a process needs.
Which products does India Salt list?
The catalogue separately lists industrial salt and refined iodized edible salt in defined packing formats.
