What the BIS product manual covers
The BIS product manual names refined iodized salt, vacuum evaporated iodized salt and iodized salt. It outlines sampling and test equipment for characteristics including moisture, water-insoluble matter, chloride as NaCl, calcium, magnesium, sulphate, iodine and contaminants.
The product name matters. A buyer should not use the three labels interchangeably or assume a standard applies merely because salt contains iodine.
Why iodine is stated at two points
The BIS consumer summary states minimum iodine of 30 ppm at manufacture and 15 ppm at retail. Iodine can be affected by storage and distribution, so a manufacturer-level result and the condition of the pack through the supply chain both matter.
Define when and where the sample is tested, how the product will be stored, and the remaining distribution period. Do not treat a single historic report as proof of every future batch.
Connect BIS, FSSAI and the actual label
BIS explains a product standard; FSSAI governs food-business licensing and food requirements. FSSAI’s iodized-salt FAQ explains that common salt for direct human consumption or use as a food ingredient is generally required to be iodized, with specified exemptions.
For a private-label order, confirm the licensed roles, approved artwork, pack material, declarations, net quantity, batch coding, best-before and storage statement. The final printed pack is part of compliance, not decoration added after the salt is accepted.
Receiving checklist for a bulk edible-salt lot
At receipt, reconcile the legal seller, manufacturer or packer, licence details, product name, batch or lot, net quantity, pack declarations, manufacturing or packing date, best-before statement, storage instruction and certificate. Check seal integrity, contamination, wet or damaged outer bags and whether the batch on the document matches the physical stock.
For distribution or private label, retain approved artwork and a finished pack from the run. Iodine protection depends on production, pack integrity and storage through the chain, so a compliant manufacturing result should be paired with controlled handling and an appropriate remaining shelf period.

Buyer questions
Frequently asked questions
What iodine level does BIS show?
The BIS consumer summary states at least 30 ppm at manufacture and at least 15 ppm at retail for iodized salt.
Is a BIS standard the same as an FSSAI licence?
No. A product standard and a food-business licence are different controls. Buyers should verify both where applicable to the actual supplier, premises and product.
Can I use non-iodized salt in food?
FSSAI guidance generally restricts common salt for direct human consumption or use as a food ingredient unless iodized, subject to specified exemptions. Confirm the current rule for the exact use.
